Despite a population of only 22,600, Naples boasts the sixth-highest per capita income in the United States. The city is known for its world-class shopping, culture, and restaurants, as well as its proximity to some of Florida’s most important nature preserves, including the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge and the Everglades National Park. Naples is served by two airports, Naples Municipal Airport and the Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers. Naples satellite cities and suburbs include Fort Myers, Golden Gate, Lely, Old Marco Junction, Keewaydin Island, Tice, Gateway, Cape Coral, Pine Island, Estero Island, Sanibel Island and, Buckingham. Miami is a two-hour drive to the east, and Orlando is four hours to the north.
Naples’ sunny weather and the turquoise waters of the Gulf Coast offer plenty of opportunities for water sports, and the city’s beaches are popular with tourists and locals alike. Get away from the crowds and into nature at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, or beat the heat at the Sun-N-Fun Lagoon. Need some retail therapy? The Village Shops on Venetian Bay offer an eclectic mix of high-end boutiques, spas, and dining experiences.
The Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles compete in the NCAA Division I and are arguably Naples’ most popular sports team. The Naples United Football Club competes in the NPSL, while Miracle is a MiLB team located in nearby Fort Myers. Naples greatest sports obsession, however, is Pickleball, a paddlesport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. The city hosts the annual Minto US Open Pickleball Championships.
Naples enjoys over 2,900 hours of sunshine a year, with highs in the seventies and eighties in the summer. Winters are short and generally frost-free. The city gets an average of 54 inches of rain a year, and summers can get uncomfortably humid. Expect the period between late September and early May to be windy but cooler.
