The capital of Florida, Tallahassee is the seventh-largest city in the state, and a major hub for government, trade, and education. Florida State University, the Florida A&M University, and the Tallahassee Community College all make their home in Tallahassee. The city is also home to the Florida Bar, the Florida Chamber of Commerce, and approximately thirty state agencies.
Tallahassee is served by the Tulsa International Airport (TUL). Panama City lies 110 miles to the west, while Jacksonville is 183 miles to the east. The city’s satellite cities and suburbs include Perkins, Capitola, Bradfordville, Homestead Ridge, Woodville, Ochlockonee, Midway, Scotland, Bradfordville, and Fort Braden.
Government, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and education dominate the Tallahassee economy. The city is a regional center for the sciences, and home to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. Tallahassee has a college student population of 70,000, which brings a significant amount of income to the city.
Tallahassee has plenty to offer both residents and visitors. Take in a musical performance at Railroad Square Art Park, or travel out of town to explore the trails of the Ochlockonee River State Park. Spend a day immersed in the city’s history at the Florida Historic Capitol Museum, or sample local cuisine at the Tallahassee Wine and Food Festival. For something a little different, scare yourself silly at the Terror of Tallahassee haunted house.
College sports dominate the Tallahassee athletic scene. Cheer on one of Florida State Seminoles twenty varsity teams--with nineteen national championships, the Seminoles are one of the most successful collegiate athletic teams in the country. The Seminoles football team plays at Doak Campbell stadium. The city is also home to the Florida A&M Rattlers, who play at Bragg Memorial Stadium.
Like most of Florida, Tallahassee has long summers and short winters. Highs in the summer average 87 to 92 Fahrenheit, occasionally rising above 100 degrees. Expect showers and thunderstorms in the summer, and average of 32 winter nights at or below freezing. Snow and ice are rare in the winter.
We understand not every visit to Tallahassee is for pleasure or business. If you’re seeking medical care, Tallahassee is home to the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, as well as the Capital Regional Medical Center and Memorial Medical Center.
