Charlotte was named after Queen Charlotte Sophia, who was the Queen Consort of Britain’s King George III. When the Revolutionary War began, British General Charles Cornwallis gave the city another nickname—after being driven out of town by citizens loyal to the Revolutionary forces, Cornwallis called the city a “hornet’s nest of rebellion.” Today, the Hornet’s Nest remains a popular nickname for Charlotte.

A subtropical city Charlotte has short cool winters and hot, humid summers. Year-round temperatures reach a high of 89°F in July and a low of 31°F in January. The city’s proximity to the Gulf of Mexico results in regular rainfall, with a rate of 41.6 inches annually.
