ABOUT THE PITTSBURGH AREA

Named in 1758 by General John Forbes, Pittsburgh has long been known for its steelwork industry. Today, Pittsburgh is a city of skyscrapers and 446 bridges, and home to 68 colleges, world-class restaurants, tech companies, and historical sites. Woodspring’s extended stay hotel in the region is conveniently located in Cranberry Township.

Pittsburgh is served by three airports: the Pittsburgh International Airport, Northeast Pittsburgh Airport, and Beaver County Airport. The city’s suburbs and satellite cities include Cranberry Township, Seven Fields, Warrendale, Callery, Evans City, Mars, Wexford, Economy, Valencia, Zelienople, and Youngstown, Ohio. Philadelphia is a 300-mile drive to the east, while Columbus, Ohio lies 185 miles to the west.

Pittsburgh remains a center of the steel industry, with over 300 steel-related businesses in the city. In addition to manufacturing, Pittsburgh’s economy includes such industries as cyber defense, robotics, software engineering, and energy research. Seven Fortune 500 businesses operate in Pittsburgh, including Wesco International, Alcoa, United States Steel Corporation, PPG, PNC Financial, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Kraft Heinz.

Pittsburgh offers a mix of historic and modern attractions to visitors and residents alike. The National Aviary lets you get up close with over 150 different bird species, as well as encounters with sloths, bats, and armadillos. If thrills are more your thing, the Hundred Acre Manor Haunted House will have you screaming. Indulge your shopping desires at Ross Park Mall, or dig into the past at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

Sports play a major role in Pittsburgh life. The city is home to three professional teams: the NFL Steelers, the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team, and the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL. The University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, and Robert Morris University all compete in Division I sports.
