The second-largest city on the Mississippi River, Memphis, Tennessee, is one of the most important cultural and commercial centers in the southern United States. The city was the site of Dr. Martin Luthor King, Jr.’s assassination in 1968 and now home to the National Civil Rights Museum. Memphis has a humid subtropical climate, with hot humid summers and the chance of thunderstorms year-round. July sees average temperatures of 83 Fahrenheit, while winters are relatively mild, with average January temperatures of 41 Fahrenheit. Fall is dryer than the other seasons, although hot temperatures can continue well into October.
