First established as a military camp during the Mexican War, Fort Worth was a major stop on the Chisholm Trail, where millions of cattle were driven north in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The city, now home to f874,168 people, retains much of its cowboy heritage--downtown is known as Hell's Half Acre for the historic gunfights that used to break out in downtown saloons, and every year Fort Worth hosts the Stockyards Rodeo, the world’s largest indoor rodeo.
Fort Worth’s satellite cities and suburbs include Forest Hill, Southlake, Las Colinas, Denton, Plano, McKinney, Rockwall, Blue Mound, Haltom City, Arlington, Saginaw, North Richland Hills, and Sansom Park. Dallas is a short thirty-minute drive to the east.
Manufacturing is a major part of the Fort Worth economy, with government sector jobs, transportation, communication, and the utility industries also playing an important role in the city’s financial growth. Major employers include American Airlines, Pier 1 Imports, SABRE, and Lockheed Martin.
In terms of weather, Fort Worth lies in a humid subtropical climate. July is the hottest month, with an average high of 72℉. Winters are short and mild, with an average snowfall of 2.6 inches. The city’s geographic location makes it susceptible to severe thunderstorms, which can generate hail and tornadoes.
