Despite having a modest population of only 256,000, Lubbock is the economic, medical, and education center for surrounding counties, a position that’s earned it the nickname “the Hub City.” Lubbock is the seat of Lubbock County and the home of Texas Tech University. Famous as the birthplace of musician Buddy Holly, the city is also known for the annual National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration. Lubbock Lies has a semiarid climate, with extremely hot summers. Expect an average of 78-80 afternoons a year when the temperatures climb above 90 or even 100℉. Winters are sunny and mild in the afternoons, but mornings usually drop below freezing. Thunderstorms are common in the spring, carrying with them the risk of tornados and heavy hail. Be prepared for some windy conditions too--with an average wind speed of 12.4 mph, Lubbock is one of the windiest cities in the United States.
